Anxiety is a term that relates to both physical and emotional feelings that we can experience when we are worried or nervous about something. Whilst it can feel unpleasant at the time, it does kick start our inbuilt flight or fight response; a normal biological reaction to times when we feel threatened.  

There are of course times when anxiety becomes a mental health issue, this is usually when it is more than just a fight or flight and it actually starts to have an impact on your everyday life.  

If this is the case for you then there is a chance that you may have an anxiety disorder and you should discuss this with your doctor.  

Are there times when we all feel anxious?

If you look back over your life there is a good chance you will have felt anxious at some point. This may have been a time when you were faced with a difficult decision or perhaps a stressful event.  

Examples of times when anxiety is commonly felt are: 

  • During exams or tests 
  • Starting a new job 
  • Being diagnosed with an illness or having to go into hospital 
  • At a job interview 

During these points in your life it is understandable that you will have concerns about the outcome or how you will perform. You might find that for a short period of time (often just a few days) you will find it harder to sleep, your appetite will change and you may even struggle to concentrate. These are all signs of normal levels of anxiety and they all should pass given time.  

When does anxiety become a mental health issue?

Although we all feel anxious from time to time, for some, anxiety can be a mental health problem.  

It is hard to know when it should be classed as a problem that requires treatment, especially since anxiety is a common feeling. However, if you are finding that your periods of anxiousness are becoming longer or that you feel overwhelmed by your feelings, then perhaps it is a good idea to seek professional help.
